The Truth About Being Queer in Nepal (From Someone Who Actually Knows)
A late-night FaceTime with my friend Bob (Naba to his family back home) just shifted my whole perspective on Nepal.
Heās originally from Kathmandu, lives in Sydney now, but stays deeply connected to whatās happening back home.
And what he shared made me realizeā¦
š Weāve all been sleeping on Nepal.
Not because itās perfect. (Itās not.)
But because something fascinating is happening there.
ā While everyoneās chasing overpriced lattes in Lisbon⦠Nepal just quietly registered its first same-sex marriages. Like, ever. š This happened in November 2023.
And hereās what blew my mind:
š§ A recent Gallup poll showed 87% of Nepalis think their country is āa good place for gay people to live.ā (Thatās higher than some places we call āprogressive.ā)
Naba broke it down for me:
āNepalās not trying to be another Bali or Bangkok,ā he explained. āWeāre doing our own thing. Moving at our own pace.ā
And heās right.
Because while Nepal might not tick all the boxes yetā¦
š„ Theyāre making moves that matter:
ā Same-sex relationships? Legal since 2007
ā Third gender recognition? On passports and IDs
ā Marriage registration? Started late 2023
ā Public acceptance? Some of the highest in Asia
But Naba kept it real about the gaps too:
ā ļø Marriage rights are still ātemporaryā
ā ļø Legal protections arenāt complete
ā ļø Some LGBTQ+ support centers have shut down due to funding cuts
āItās a work in progress,ā he admits. āBut the progress is real.ā
š» Now letās talk Digital Nomad Life
Nepal offers something different. Something deeper.
šø Living costs under $900/month in Kathmandu
š§āāļø Co-working spaces without the tech bro energy
š¶ WiFi (30ā80 Mbps) in major cities
š A vibe thatās more soul search than scale fast
š But letās keep it honest:
ā” Power outages? Still happen
š Rural internet? Spotty at best
š³ Banking? Needs an upgrade
šļø And yep⦠landslides can shut roads. (Nature keeps it real in Nepal.)
š§ So Hereās the Truth:
If you need:
24/7 fiber internet
Full legal certainty
Or a Starbucks on every cornerā¦
Nepalās not there yet.
But if youāre craving:
A place to create deeply
Connection beyond Instagram
Affordable living
And a culture thatās slowlyābut surelyāopening its armsā¦
Nepal deserves your attention.
Not because itās perfect. But because itās real.
And sometimes?
The most meaningful destinations arenāt the ones with the smoothest roads. Theyāre the ones still paving their way forward. With intention. With heart. And with a community thatās ready to welcome you⦠just as you are.
WEāRE HIRING!

Get Your Insiderās Guide to Puerto Vallarta
Wondering what daily life might really look like as a digital nomad in Puerto Vallarta?
Letās paint you a little picture...
You wake up to the sound of waves or birds in the jungle hills.
After a smoothie from the local fruit stand, you head to a breezy cafƩ or co-working space with fibre internet and sea views.
Lunchtime? Tacos and cold coconut water from a street vendor who knows your name.
Evenings mean beach walks, art shows, salsa classes, or queer-friendly happy hours where locals and expats mix effortlessly.
Itās not a fantasy ā itās what many of my clients now call normal.

āļø NOMAD HACK:
How to Never Lose Your Sh*t (Literally)
Before you zip up your suitcase, do this:
šø Take a photo of everything inside.
Yesāopen it up and snap a quick pic.
Then:
šø Take a photo of your passport
šø Your credit cards (front and back)
šø Your vaccination card or key meds
šø And any bag claim tags from the airport
Store it all in a secure cloud folder (I use one called āTRAVEL - EMERGENCYā in Google Drive).
Why?
Because if your bag goes missing, your wallet gets stolen, or you have to prove what was inside your luggage for insurance?
These pics become your receipts, lifeline, and sanity-saver.
(Ask me how I learned this after a friend lost his backpack in BogotĆ”āwith every single pair of underwear he owned. š)
For extra creditāif youāre forced to check a bag, take a few photos of it at the airportāpreferably next to something that has the date. This way if the Samsonite Gorilla turns your bag into a play toy, youāve got proof of itās condition before it was destroyed (One airline boggled a brand-new $500 bag of mine on it's first outing, but I had no way to prove it was their fault).
PRIDENOMAD ADVENTURE:
šļø From Unicorn Exit to Jungle Awakening: Why Iām Going to Costa Rica This July (And You Might Want to Join Me)
You ever meet someone and instantly know: theyāve been through the fire, and what came out is pure gold?
Thatās how I felt when I first talked to Shelby Clark.
Heās the founder of Turoāyou know, the Airbnb-for-cars unicorn thatās worth billions.
But thatās not the story I want to tell you.
Because Shelby got pushed out of that company.
And instead of clinging to status or chasing another VC-funded highā¦
He let it all go.
He ended up in Bali.
Then in the jungle.
Then in himself.
š± Hereās what Shelby told me:
āI was a queer kid in a straight world. So I overachieved to feel loved. I built Turo to prove I was worthy.
But when I was pushed outā¦I didnāt know who I was anymore.
Yoga brought me back into my body. Plant medicine brought me back into my soul.ā
His voice softened.
āThatās when I stopped trying to build something impressiveāand started building something true.ā
That something became the Jungle Gayborhoodāa queer sanctuary hidden in 300 acres of Costa Rican rainforest, surrounded by waterfalls, toucans, and radical possibility.
š So why am I telling you this now?
Because Iām going.
And youāre invited.
This July, Iāll be at the Jungle Gayborhood for a transformational retreat with Shelby and his team.
I donāt say this lightly, but:
š If youāre at a turning point in your lifeā¦
š If youāve achieved a lot but feel emptyā¦
š If youāre ready to peel off the armor and finally exhaleā¦
Then come with me, and join other PrideNomads.
Weāll be dancing under waterfalls.
Laying down old identities.
Breathing deep into who we really are.
And yesāfor those calledāthereās a plant medicine path too.
(With science-backed results, zero pressure, and 100% queer safety.)
š The Details
šļø July 27-August 2,2025
š Costa Rica, near Quepos + Manuel Antonio
š³ļøāš LGBTQ+ onlyādeeply trans-affirming & heart-forward
And thanks to Shelby, you get $200 off any retreat, anytime this year (but only if you mention PrideNomad).
(YesāCome with us in July. Youāll be with me and other PrideNomads for a week that could change everything.)
š§ Ready for Your Own Jungle Awakening?
Or just reply to this email with āCOSTA RICAā and weāll send you the details.
You donāt need to be perfect.
You just need to be ready to come home to yourself.
Letās go.
P.S. Hey ā quick personal note, just between us nomadsā¦
I just released the pre-release edition of my book, No Closets. No Borders.
Itās not fully polished yet ā but itās real. And raw.
And maybe the most honest thing Iāve ever written.
I made it pay what you want (with a $9 minimum), not because I donāt think itās worth moreā¦
But because I wanted this to reach the people who need it most.
Thereās a reason for that ā and Iāll share the full story next week.
If youāve ever felt like the world wasnāt quite made for people like usā¦
This book might just remind you youāre not alone.
š Download your pay-what-you-want copy here before the final version drops.
With pride & wanderlust,
Ken
