UP FRONT:

Unravel the Mystery of Taxes for PrideNomads™.

Traveling the world while working from anywhere sounds like a dream, right? But there's one thing we can't forget about: taxes!

Let's break it down so it's super easy to understand.

Navigating the tax maze in different countries is key to keeping things smooth and smart on the money front.

Step one: Peek into tax treaties.

These are like friendly handshakes between countries that say, "Hey, we won't make you pay taxes twice on the same cash." If your home base and your adventure land have this handshake, you're usually golden, especially if you're not setting up shop permanently.

But the world's a big place, and not every country has these agreements.

When there's no treaty, your tax situation might hinge on the type of visa you have. Some countries, such as Estonia, roll out the red carpet with digital nomad visas, which let you work and wander without becoming a tax local. It's like getting a "no tax worries" badge for your stay.

Now, what if there's no treaty or special visa to save the day?

Staying organized can save you a fortune at tax time.

Enter the concept of "local source income."

This basically means if you're making money directly from something in a country, that country might want a piece of the pie.

If you're hopping from place to place, lighting up local economies as you go, you might need to chip in tax-wise (there’s another concern—if you’re in the country on a tourist visa and are caught working or doing business in that country, you might be in for some trouble—either having your visa revoked or in the case of some unfortunate visitors to Thailand, you could end up in jail!)

Typically if you’re doing business in your home country and NOT doing business in the location you’re visiting, you shouldn’t have an issue. But if you’re actually doing business in the country you’re visiting, that’s another story.

While technically you should pay for any money you make locally, not every country will chase down short-term visitors.

Still, it's not a free pass. The rules are there, even if they're not always enforced with an iron fist.

So, what's the game plan?

Stay sharp about where your money's coming from and how different spots on the map handle taxes.

Keep a travel log—not just for Instagram, but for tracking your work spots and stays. It's a perfect way to keep track of your tax status.

When in doubt, team up with a tax guru who gets the whole digital nomad/expat lifestyle. They can help you tailor a tax plan that fits your nomad life like a glove.

We just developed a relationship with a company that specializes in taxes for American expats and digital nomads. When you use this link, you’ll get a $25 new client credit (if you’re a citizen of another country, let us know your recommendations so we can share them with our readers).

The key to all of this is consistent record-keeping to document your travels and your potential tax liability. Plan ahead to avoid problems later.

NOMAD HACK

How to Manage Your Calendar Like a Pro.

Our nomadic lifestyle gives us the blessings of some incredible experiences, but while we’re living a life of adventure, most of us are still running a business or working at some level.

One fundamental challenge has been how to deal with the many time zones that you’ll be visiting. To add even more complexity, there’s daylight savings to consider, and even more interesting is that different parts of the world observe daylight savings on different dates (Australia and the USA change their clocks about a month apart, which can get very confusing).

Then there are the areas that don’t observe daylight savings (ie the US Virgin Islands, Arizona and Queensland, Australia for instance). And then there are areas whose time zone is 30 minutes different (South Australia as an example).

So how do you keep track of it all and how can you be sure to show up at the right time for a Zoom meeting—or even more important, showing up for a flight or train?

Set an “index time zone” for all of your meetings.

For instance, I set all meetings in my calendar on USA Eastern Time. That way no matter where I am in the world, my iPhone and computer clocks will automatically adjust my calendar to the local time.

If I’m scheduling something in my destination time zone, I will be sure to set the appointment time in that specific time zone on my calendar.

Here’s a warning, though—some online calendars are NOT always in sync with local times—we’ve seen problems with Calendly in the past—ie not properly displaying local times, so ALWAYS check the time zone when you’re doing online scheduling with appointment software!

When you’ve got everything indexed, you can relax and maintain control of your life.
