If you’re feeling spontaneous and find that airfares to your location are insane, consider this: Look at the closest hub city and price your flight there, then add another flight from the hub to your destination.

For example, if you want to fly from Newark to Edinburgh and find the price a bit over the top, check the price to other nearby cities, such as Dublin and then check on a cheap flight from there to Edinburgh. Fares to major cities are usually more competitive, and you can capitalize on short-hop flights on discount carriers from those hubs.

In the example below, you’d save $307 by adding that little stopover. If you aren’t pressed for time, you can turn that stopover into a free side trip as well.
