Welcome to Taiwan: A Beacon for LGBTQ+ Digital Nomads

As one of our top 10 PrideNomad destinations (see Issue 102), Taiwan stands out as a leader in LGBTQ+ rights within Asia, making it an excellent destination for digital nomads seeking both professional opportunities and a vibrant, inclusive culture.

Celebrating Diversity

Recently, President Tsai Ing-wen extended congratulations to Nymphia Wind, the first person from East Asia to win “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”

How amazing to have your country’s leader celebrate inclusion this way!

This victory highlights Taiwan's support for LGBTQ+ individuals, emphasizing the island's liberal values. Tsai's message on X may be the first time that any world leader was so supportive of the drag community.

In 2019, Taiwan became the first in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage, solidifying its role as a progressive haven.

Each October, Taipei hosts East Asia's largest Pride march, demonstrating the community's solidarity. Last year's march was historic, with Vice President Lai Ching-te participating, making him the highest-ranking official to do so, showcasing Taiwan's governmental support for LGBTQ+ rights.

So is it any wonder that we’re celebrating this amazing country today!

Ideal Working Conditions

Taipei is rich with coworking spaces such as FutureWard and CLBC that cater to the needs of digital nomads with great internet and friendly/productive work environments.

And you don’t have to feel disconnected. Groups like Taipei Expats and  Digital Nomads Taiwan provide platforms for you to network and participate in the local culture.

LGBTQ+ Friendly Spaces

The Red House District is not just a nightlife hub but also a center for LGBTQ+ friendly cafes and bookshops suitable for daytime work and socializing. Gin Gin Books, Asia’s first LGBTQ+ bookstore, is a notable spot if you’re looking to relax in a welcoming atmosphere.

Rainbow crosswalks always make us feel welcome.

Must-See Destinations and Living Tips

PrideNomads can find comfortable living in central Taipei areas like Da’an or Zhongzheng, known for their proximity to parks and cultural hotspots.

You’ll also like Taiwan’s reliable public transport system, which makes it easy to explore the island’s picturesque landscapes and bustling city scenes.

For a blend of work and leisure, be sure to check out:

  • Taipei 101 and the Xinyi District: Not only can you visit the iconic skyscraper, but also enjoy the surrounding area's shops and eateries.

  • Taroko Gorge: Perfect for weekend retreats, offering breathtaking views and a serene environment for relaxation.

  • Tainan: Known as the "City of Snacks," it's ideal for food enthusiasts looking for a taste of local cuisine in a laid-back setting.

Practical Tips

Taiwan's advanced infrastructure supports a high-quality lifestyle with affordable healthcare and safety. Learning basic Mandarin and understanding local customs such as polite behavior and the exchange of business cards can enrich your experience (you might want to quick-print a few locally if you don’t normally have them).

Why Choose Taiwan for Your Next Adventure?

Taiwan's open-hearted approach makes it a safe haven for LGBTQ+ nomads. The island combines the convenience of urban life with the beauty of natural retreats. Whether you're looking to expand your professional network, immerse in a new culture, or simply find a safe place to be yourself, Taiwan belongs on your list!

STAY CONNECTED:

Staying Connected Internationally: A Guide to Using eSIMs and Local Services

Traveling internationally doesn't mean you have to lose touch with home or struggle with connectivity. Whether you opt for modern eSIM technology or traditional SIM cards, understanding your options will help you stay connected affordably and effectively.

Understanding eSIMs

An eSIM is a digital SIM that lets you activate a cellular plan without the need for a physical SIM card. This technology can be particularly convenient for travelers since it eliminates the need to buy and swap physical SIM cards in each destination.

Benefits of Using eSIMs

  1. Ease of Use: Activate an eSIM plan directly on your device without handling tiny SIM cards.

  2. Maintain Multiple Numbers: Devices with eSIM technology can hold both an eSIM and a physical SIM, allowing you to access home and local numbers simultaneously.

  3. Cost-Effective Options: eSIM plans can be cheaper than traditional roaming plans, especially for short trips or as a temporary solution until you can buy a local SIM.

Staying connected is a foundational element of being a PrideNomad, but remember to stop looking at your phone and focus on your surroundings!

Choosing the Right Plan

While eSIMs offer convenience, they are sometimes not the most cost-effective option for longer stays. Here’s how to make smart connectivity choices:

  1. Use eSIMs as a Stopgap: For immediate connectivity upon arrival, an international eSIM can be a practical choice. Providers like Airalo and GigSky offer plans that activate instantly and work across multiple countries.

  2. Purchase Local SIMs at Your Destination: Often, the most economical option is buying a local SIM card. Many international airports have kiosks where you can purchase SIM cards at competitive rates, often with better deals than you would find in your home country.

  3. Consider Roaming with Your Current Carrier: For some travelers, using a roaming plan from your current provider might be enough. For example, Australian carriers Optus and Telstra offer roaming at about $5 AUD per day. In the USA, T-Mobile’s $25 per month international plan includes unlimited data and SMS worldwide, which can be a great deal for frequent travelers.

Tips for Non-Tech Savvy Users

  • Research Before You Go: Look up whether your phone supports eSIM and what plans are available from your current carrier for international travel.

  • Ask for Help at the Airport: Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance at airport kiosks when purchasing a local SIM. Staff can usually help you choose the best plan and set up your phone.

  • Check for Connectivity Apps: Use apps from eSIM providers for easy management of your plans and data.

The Bottom Line

Whether you go digital with an eSIM or stick to traditional SIM cards, there are plenty of options to stay connected while traveling. Understand your priorities and plan ahead so you can enjoy seamless and affordable internet access, making your international travels smoother and more connected than ever.

NOMAD HACK

How to Get Through Immigration Faster

If you hate waiting on long (slow) lines at airport immigration, pay attention to this simple hack that we’ve been using for years.

It comes in 2 parts.

First, sit as close to the exit as possible so you can get off the plane first. You need to beat the crowd and get in front of everyone else on your flight.

If your aircraft is not parked at the jetway and you’re forced to take a bus to the terminal, get on the bus last.

Remember, if you’re on last, you’re off first!

Next, you want to walk very briskly to the immigration area. Don’t be shy here! Every person you pass as you race past them is a person that will be behind you on that immigration line.

No one likes to wait on line. Walk briskly toward immigration.

If you’re on a moving walkway and someone is in your way, say a polite “excuse me” so you can pass them. This is not the time to chill out and relax—you’re on a sprint to get to the front of the immigration line.

For extra credit, do a bit of airport research. For instance, in Bangkok, Suvarnabhumi International Airport has two immigration areas. Often one is jam-packed while the other is relatively empty. When you know your options, you can strategize properly.

If you have special needs, be sure to have a wheelchair reserved for you in advance and triple check with your flight crew to be sure it’s waiting for you. Typically wheelchair passengers skip the lines and go directly to the immigration agent!

Quiz Answer:

Berlin.

Berlin hosts the Berlinale Panorama, part of the larger Berlin International Film Festival, which features a wide range of international LGBTQ+ films. This festival is a major draw for those interested in LGBTQ+ culture, including digital nomads who value arts and culture.

That’s it for this week. See you next week. Please share this with your friends!
