The $5K Escape Plan (Part 6): Make the Decision
How to Choose Your First Move (In Under an Hour)
This is where people stall.
Not in the research.
In the decision.
They keep looking for:
The perfect country
The perfect plan
The perfect timing
None of those exist.
Here's what actually works:
You don't pick the best country.
You pick the cleanest first move.
So let's make this simple.
Here's what I want you to do:
Set a timer for one hour.
Close every other tab.
Turn off your phone.
You've spent weeks (maybe months) thinking about this.
You're going to make the decision today.
The $5K Escape Plan: Decision Method
Step 1: Write Down Your Top 3 Non-Negotiables
No more than three.
Things that have to work.
Examples:
"I need to feel legally safe"
"I need access to decent healthcare"
"I need a quiet, comfortable place to live"
If it doesn't make your top 3…
it's not a non-negotiable.
Step 2: Eliminate Aggressively
Take the countries you're considering.
Cut anything that doesn't clearly support your top 3.
No "maybe."
No "I'll figure it out."
If it's not obvious—cut it.
Step 3: Check Your Runway Honestly
Look at your $5K.
Ask:
"How long can I operate here before stress kicks in?"
90 days = ideal
60 days = workable
under 45 = pressure
Pressure leads to bad decisions.
Step 4: Stress-Test Your Day-to-Day
This is where most people lie to themselves.
They think: "I'll adapt." "It'll be fine." "I'll figure it out."
Stop.
Ask yourself honestly:
"What's going to feel harder here… every single day?"
Be brutally specific:
Will you struggle with the language?
Will the heat drain you?
Will bureaucracy make you want to quit?
Will isolation creep in?
If you're already negotiating with yourself—
("I mean, I could probably handle it…")
—pay attention.
That hesitation is data.
Step 5: Make the Call
Not "the best option."
Just the one that:
Removes the most friction… right now.
That's it.
What people don't expect:
Once you make a clear decision…
the anxiety drops.
Not because everything is solved.
Because now you have direction.
Back to David
He didn't pick the "best" country.
He picked the one that solved his biggest problem first.
Booked a short-term place.
Gave himself 60 days.
That was enough to move.
And that's the point most people miss:
This isn't a life decision.
It's a first move.
You're not locking yourself in.
You're buying:
Time
Clarity
Momentum
So here's the only question that matters now:
"Where can I land—without fighting my environment every day?"
Answer that honestly.
And you'll know where to go.
You don't need more research.
You don't need more options.
You need to trust the decision you're about to make.
So make it.

NOMAD HACK:
✈️ The 24-Hour Free Cancellation Window (Airlines Hate This)
Here’s something most people don’t use properly:
When you book a flight (especially to/from the U.S.), you often have 24 hours to cancel for a full refund.
The Hack
When you find a decent flight:
Book it immdiately.
Then use the next 24 hours to:
Check better routes
Compare prices
Confirm your plans
If you find something better?
Cancel. Full refund.
Why this is powerful
Most people hesitate… and prices go up.
This lets you:
Lock in a seat instantly
Eliminate FOMO
Keep flexibility without risk
Pro Move
Book at night → recheck in the morning with fresh eyes.
Bottom Line
Stop overthinking flights.
Reserve first. Decide after.

Raymond's Problem: Where Do You Go When Health Isn't Optional?
Raymond, one of our amazing subscribers wrote in last week.
He's 72.
He has health issues.
He wants a tropical beach vibe… but he needs reliable healthcare, affordability, and fast access back to the U.S. if something goes wrong.
This isn't a travel question.
It's a risk management problem disguised as a lifestyle decision.
The Mistake Almost Everyone Makes
They choose based on
Cost
Weather
Photos
What they don't choose based on:
👉 What happens when something goes wrong
That's the filter that matters here.
Because at this stage, the wrong decision doesn't mean inconvenience.
It means delayed care, language gaps, system confusion—or needing to leave fast without a plan.
The Only Filter That Matters
If healthcare is a real variable, every country needs to pass three tests:
Private Healthcare You Can Access Quickly
Short, Direct Flights to the U.S.
A System That Doesn't Require You to "Figure It Out" Under Stress
That eliminates most of the world immediately.
The Shortlist (That Actually Works)
🇲🇽 Mexico (If You Choose the Right Place)
Fast, affordable private healthcare. Huge expat infrastructure. Easy flights back.
Best zones: Puerto Vallarta, Playa del Carmen, Ajijic/Lake Chapala
Here's where people get burned:
They say "I'm moving to Mexico"—and wonder why it didn't work.
Mexico isn't one experience. It's 50.
Pick the wrong micro-location, and you'll be fighting your environment every day.
🇨🇷 Costa Rica (Stability Over Speed)
Politically stable. Solid healthcare. Clean, predictable systems.
Tradeoffs: More expensive. Slower processes.
Best zones: Guanacaste, Central Valley
Bottom line: This is the "I just want it to work" option.
🇨🇴 Colombia (High Upside, More Homework)
Excellent private healthcare. Affordable insurance. Growing expat ecosystem.
Best zones: Medellín, Cartagena
Bottom line: High-ceiling play—but it's not a "show up and figure it out" destination.
The Smarter Way to Do This
Don't "move."
Test.
Pick one location and:
Stay 30–60 days
Visit a hospital (before you need it)
Learn how appointments actually work
See how you feel—physically and mentally
That tells you more than six months of research ever will.
Bottom Line
If health is part of the equation:
👉 Proximity beats novelty
👉 Simplicity beats "adventure"
👉 Systems beat scenery
You can still have the beach.
You just don't want to gamble to get it.
